marksearch teamed up with Youth Beat, Oakland Unified School District's youth media training program and the Oakland's Youth Poet Laureates to listen, learn, and contribute to discussions about Oakland's most pressing issues today, including cultural legacy, gentrification, homelessness, and processing emotions around loss of life. This was part of Oakland Museum of CA's program Around the Block, a day of community-building to share, document, and express stories, illuminating important issues around Oakland's cultural legacy.
Leading up to the day, marksearch collaborated with Youth Beat journalists to create vibrant and inviting temporary staging, a physical 'forum' to ground and contextualize the day's interactions. Based on their input and designed for reuse, this mobile staging was emboldened with Youth Beat's logo by local graffiti artist Tion Bukue.
The day included zine-making, interviews, readings and a panel discussion about questions of belonging, transition, community change.
