Hands That Do All Celebration

Tondela, Portugal 2012

A creative investigation and commemoration of centuries' old sustainable labor and craft practices in rural Portugal. After all of our visits with makers and crafters, we created an installation of our research and commemorative plaques in the regional old market hall. The installation, the only presentation of all 33 plaques, was well-attended by locals and government officials. Participants were proud to show others their plaque, as well as rarely displayed tools that have been used for generations for craft and agriculture production. The project's website was projected on a screen made from an olive harvesting tarp and local eucalyptus saplings. At the close of the exhibition, the plaques were permanently installed in the community center in each maker's village. We shared local tastes, including a unique hybrid bean, paprika and tea, with project supporters.
